class descriptions

at asmi yoga we believe in balance.  we love the yang (strong, powerful)  like vinyasa and astanga, but feel that the softer (easy does it, yin, deep stretch) classes are a critical component in a well-rounded practice.  we hope you'll find what you need to manifest your most healthy, shining state of being!

vinyasa yoga
is a beautiful sequencing of postures, incorporating sun salutations to build heat, strength & stamina in the body.  this is a dynamic practice accessible to all levels, as modifications will be given throughout.

easy does it is true gentle yoga.  no flow, no sweat, no chatturangas.  just simple postures & breathing to reduce stress, heal the body & soften any rough edges caused by being human in a challenging world.  this is a perfect practice if you need to slow down & savor the simple things, if you're recovering from injury, are pregnant or just had a hard day.  all levels welcome.

deep stretch is just what it sounds like.  lots of focus on the stretching aspects of yoga, without the strength building aspect of vinyasa.  after a gentle warm-up, deep stretch releases connective tissue in the belly of the muscle (vs at the origin & insertion like in yin).  suitable for every body.

yin yoga is a beautifully meditative practice.  it's mostly floor work geared toward releasing restriction in the hips and low back, although other body parts are involved as well.  done without a warm-up, yin yoga focuses more on releasing connective tissue deep in the joints at the origin & insertion (vs the belly of the muscle like in deep stretch).  this is a transformational experience for both body & soul & is suitable for all levels.

therapeutic yoga incorporates gentle movements and breathing practices to reduce or alleviate the symptoms of physical, emotional or spiritual pain and illness.  postures and movement combine to stretch, strengthen and stabilize joints and muscles, and breathing practices soften the nervous system.  this is a true healing practice and is available to all levels.

vin/yin begins combines the energetic dynamics of a vinyasa practice
with the softer meditative practice of yin yoga.  it's a perfect blend of effort and ease!

kundalini inspired is a movement based practice that uses physical movement to access the body's energy system.  tension is released, blocked energy is unstuck and vitality is created.  prepare to move, to sweat and to have fun!  all levels are welcome!

yoga boot camp is mostly kundalini inspired, but with a no-holds barred application of fun challenge!

asana for every body.  gain the benefits of the yoga postures without the dynamic flow!  a mindful practice comprised of standing postures to build strength and stamina, combined with seated and standing stretching postures for flexibility and suppleness.  focus on finding balance and breath within each posture.  a great practice for healing injuries and a great adjunct to your athletic endeavors!  suitable for all levels.

restorative yoga is the yoga of "being" rather than "doing".  this style of yoga uses props (blankets, bolsters and blocks) to drape the body over, thereby creating the shape of each pose.  it is a passive practice, allowing the muscles to utterly relax into the posture, rather than stretching or straining.  as the body begins to melt into each shape, the nervous system switches into stillness and deep healing.

nirayana yoga combines elements of sivananda, vinyasa, and yin yoga with a few kundalini and edgu inspired movements integrated within.  concentration is on smooth transitions between asanas.  optional 15 minute savasana start.  you'll get pranayama, sound, slow flow, moon salutations & deep stretch.  cultivate strength, gain mental clarity & release tension.  two instructors for the price of one!  it's a wonderful way for any body and everybody to ease into the weekend..
